Active Adventures on the Kent Coast
For the ones who’d rather be moving. Our guide to the best activities for adults on the Kent coast around Deal, Walmer, Kingsdown, Sandwich and St Margaret’s Bay
There’s a particular kind of person who books a holiday and immediately wants to know what they can do with their body rather than their camera. The one whos recharge is to wake up for parkrun rather than a lie-in, who sees a clifftop and starts calculating a bike route, who considers a cold plunge a perfectly reasonable way to start a Sunday. This coastline has a lot to offer that person. And this is our guide to making the most of it – tried, tested and genuinely loved, the Forelands way.
Beach Sauna & Cold Water Therapy
🌊 Whitemills, Sandwich
The closer option and a genuinely excellent one. Whitemills near Sandwich offers sauna and cold plunge sessions on the water — the combination of heat, cold water immersion and open air on a Kent summer morning is the kind of reset that makes the rest of the day feel sharper in every way. Book in advance, particularly at weekends.
🌊 Sea Scrub Sauna, Folkestone Harbour Arm
Twenty minutes on the train from Deal and you arrive at what is now officially the UK’s largest beach spa. Sea Scrub Sauna’s Folkestone site features two wood-fired saunas, a communal cold plunge tank, a hot tub, proper warm showers and a full café serving a Japanese lunch menu — all sitting directly on the Folkestone seafront. It opened in March 2026 and is already one of the most talked-about wellness experiences in the South East. The Scandinavian sauna fits up to 16 people with a panoramic window overlooking the sea. The Shepherd’s Hut sauna is smaller, wood-fired and built by local hands in Kent — the more characterful of the two. Between rounds, the Japanese café serves the kind of food that makes sense after contrast therapy: light, considered and worth staying for. Sessions start from £17. Take the train from Deal — no car needed, and frankly arriving by train is part of the experience.
🏄 Wakeboarding & Water Sports, Whitemills, Sandwich
For those who want genuine physical challenge on the water, Whitemills delivers. The cable wakeboarding system is brilliant for beginners and experienced riders alike — no boat, no waiting, just continuous runs across open water. One-to-one lessons are available if you’re starting out. Ringo rides add a more chaotic element if wakeboarding feels like too much commitment. Open water swimming is also available for those who prefer their water challenges without the board.
🧘 SUP Yoga Whitemills, Sandwich
Stand-up paddleboard yoga on open water – considerably more challenging than it sounds and considerably more enjoyable than you’d expect. Whitemills offers SUP yoga sessions that combine the balance demands of paddleboarding with a guided yoga practice on the water. It’s the kind of thing that feels absurd until you try it, after which it becomes the thing you tell everyone about.
🏄 Paddleboarding — Bring Your Own
The coastline around Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown is excellent paddleboarding territory, particularly on calm mornings when the sea is flat and the light on the water is at its best. Launch from Walmer beach for the most accessible entry point, or from Kingsdown for a quieter stretch of coast. Early mornings are ideal – the sea is typically calmer, the beach is quiet and the experience of paddling along this coastline with the White Cliffs in the distance is genuinely hard to beat. Please note this is bring-your-own – paddle hire is not currently available locally so plan ahead if this is on your list.
Mindful Moments
🧘 Beach Yoga, Hut 55 Walmer
Every Saturday and Sunday morning, Carly Allen from Love Yoga in Deal leads a restorative beach yoga class on Walmer beach, with breakfast and freshly made coffee included in the price afterwards. Booking goes live each Monday for the following weekend and spaces are limited so book early. There are few better ways to begin a day than yoga facing the sea with coffee waiting at the end.
🧘 Walmer Castle Yoga & Sound Baths — for something with a genuinely extraordinary setting, Walmer Castle runs yoga sessions and sound baths within its historic grounds throughout the year. Practising yoga inside the grounds of a Tudor fortress with eight acres of award-winning gardens around you is an experience that’s difficult to describe and easy to recommend. Check the English Heritage events calendar for current dates.
Cycling — Coast, Cliffs & Country Lanes
This coastline rewards a bike in a way that few others do. The National Cycle Route One runs directly along the seafront from Deal through Walmer and onwards to Kingsdown. Flat, scenic and one of the most pleasurable rides on the Kent coast. But for those who want more elevation and drama, the options beyond are outstanding.
🚴. Hire at Hut 55. Bikes are available to hire directly from Hut 55 on Walmer beach, making it easy to pick up a bike, load a picnic from the hut and head off without any prior planning. Follow the coastal route south towards Kingsdown, or head north into Deal town and beyond towards Sandwich.
🚴. The Clifftop Route: Kingsdown to St Margaret’s Bay . For something more adventurous, the route from Kingsdown up and over the clifftops towards St Margaret’s Bay is one of the most dramatic rides in Kent. The climb rewards you with sweeping Channel views and the descent into St Margaret’s Bay is the kind of thing cyclists come back to repeat. The Coastguard pub at the bottom of the bay is a particularly well-earned stop.
🚴. Kingsdown to Sandwich via the Coast. A longer, flatter option following the coast north from Kingsdown through Deal and Walmer and on into Sandwich. This route passes Deal Castle, Walmer Castle and the seafront at their best, and arrives in one of England’s finest medieval towns with excellent options for lunch or a coffee. Return the same way or arrange a pick-up from Sandwich.

🏃 Parkrun — Walmer Green, Saturday Mornings
For those who can’t quite switch off the routine, or who actively don’t want to , Deal parkrun takes place every Saturday morning on Walmer Green. Free, friendly and one of the most scenic 5k routes in the county, running along the seafront with the Channel to one side and the green to the other. Register at parkrun.org.uk, bring a barcode and join in. The coffee at Hut 55 immediately afterwards is, we’d argue, the best post-parkrun reward available anywhere in the country.
🥾 The Big Walk: Sandwich Bay to St Margaret’s Bay
For those who want a serious day on their feet, this is it. The route from Sandwich Bay along the coast through Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown and up to St Margaret’s Bay covers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the South East, with the White Cliffs building drama as you go south.
The route in outline: Start at Sandwich Bay, follow the coastal path through Deal and Walmer, continue south through Kingsdown and up onto the clifftops. The final stretch brings you down into St Margaret’s Bay with the Coastguard pub at the bottom and the sea glittering in front of you. Distance varies depending on your exact start and finish points but expect between 10 and 14 miles for the full stretch.
Stops along the way:
- Hut 55, Walmer — coffee, cake and a rest in a deckchair mid-route. Possibly the best mid-walk stop on the Kent coast.
- The Zetland Arms, Kingsdown — right on the beach in Kingsdown with views straight out to sea. The ideal halfway point for lunch or a restorative drink before the clifftop climb.
- The Coastguard, St Margaret’s Bay — the destination pub. Log fires, sea views, excellent food and the satisfaction of a serious day’s walking behind you. The Beach Group discount from your cottage welcome pack applies here — your 10% voucher will be waiting for you at the property.
This walk is best done south to north if the wind is typically easterly — or arrange a taxi back from St Margaret’s Bay if doing it point to point. We’re happy to advise on logistics when you book.
