Walmer: Quiet Coast, Castle Gardens and Beach Cafés

Walmer sits immediately south of Deal, and at first glance the two blend into one another along a single stretch of coast. But spend an afternoon here and Walmer reveals a rhythm entirely its own. A long shingle beach, a beach café that has become a local institution, and eight acres of castle gardens that could occupy a morning on their own. It is quieter than Deal, built for a slower pace, and yet close enough that a ten to fifteen-minute stroll along the prom puts you back in the middle of it all.

Deal’s Quieter Neighbour, With a Character All Its Own

Where Deal has the buzz of a town having its moment, Walmer has something steadier. A village green that hosts brass bands and community events through the summer. A promenade built for proper walking, not just admiring. Walmer Castle (once a Tudor fortress) sits at the edge of it all, with gardens that come properly into their own each spring.

It is the kind of place guests arrive at expecting a base and leave having fallen for it. The yoga at Hut 55 on a Saturday morning, the paddling pool that children claim as their own, the coastal path heading south towards Kingsdown with the sea opening out ahead. And Deal, with all its restaurants, galleries and shops, is never more than a fifteen-minute walk away.

Walmer Castle & Gardens: Eight acres of award-winning gardens. A wonderful tea room and play park, plus a year-round wellbeing programme including; yoga, Sunday Tai Chi, Pilates and monthly sound baths.
Hut 55: Coffee, homemade cake, bike hire and beach yoga on Walmer beach. It has genuinely become the focal point of a stay without anyone planning it that way.
The Promenade: Flat, wide and one of the finest stretches on the Kent coast in any season. Walk, cycle, run or even roller skate into Deal or towards Kingsdown.
Roman Landings Adventure Golf: An 18-hole themed course on Walmer Green with a café, kart track and paddling pool alongside that keeps families entertained for a whole morning.
Walmer Green: Picnics, kite flying, brass bands, and the Deal parkrun every Saturday morning which is one of the most scenic 5k routes in the county.
Dining Along the Front: The Lighthouse, Evas deli, a bakery and brunch spot plus Walmer’s chip shop both sit close to the beach for an easy evening.

A Forelands Day in Walmer- The way we’d spend it

Every Foreland Cottages guest receives a list of our tried and tested local loves near their property, so you can find your own version. In the meantime, this is our suggestion:

Early morning: Yoga at Hut 55 if it’s a weekend, or simply coffee and cake in a deckchair while the beach wakes up. Hire bikes and follow the cycle path if the mood takes you.
Late morning: Walmer Castle gardens. Wander at your own pace, find a bench in the wildflower meadow.
Lunch: Stroll north into Deal along the seafront. Deal Pier Kitchen, 81 Beach Street or simply Filbert’s Deli for provisions to take back to the beach.
Afternoon. Roman Landings adventure golf if there are children involved, or back to the cottage with a book and no particular agenda. For those who like a little pamper, Skinlab for the best facial on the Kent coastline.
Evening: Simple fish at chips from Walmer chip shop, then across the road to eat them on the beach, then onto The Lighthouse for a little evening nightcap.

How far is Walmer from Deal?
Walmer is directly adjacent to Deal. The two blend seamlessly into each other along the seafront. It’s approximately a 15-minute walk along the promenade from Walmer Green to Deal Pier, or a 5-minute drive.

What is Walmer beach like?
Walmer has a long shingle beach running the length of the seafront. It’s open, clean and quieter than many Kent beaches. Dogs are welcome year-round. Sea shoes are recommended for swimming as the beach shelves on shingle.

ls there parking in Walmer?
Yes. On-street parking is available along all streets. Deal Castle car park is a short walk away and a reliable option in summer. Download the Ringo app for easy parking payment across the area.

What train station serves Walmer?
The best station for our cottages is Deal station. Its on the direct Southeastern high-speed line from London St Pancras – approximately 90 minutes. A Taxi rank is just opposite the station. Our cottages are in walking distance to the train station, but you might like a taxi if you have bags.

Is Walmer good for families?
Excellent. Roman Landings adventure golf, the paddling pool, Hut 55’s bike hire, Walmer Green for bikes and kites, the flat promenade and easy beach access make it a very good family base. Betteshanger Park is a short drive away for bigger adventures.

Can I walk from Walmer to Kingsdown?
Yes. The coastal path south to Kingsdown is approximately 2 miles and one of the loveliest walks on the coast. The Zetland Arms in Kingsdown is the natural endpoint and very much worth arriving at.

Is Walmer good for activities?
Yes. Parkrun on Saturday mornings, beach yoga at Hut 55, bike hire for the coastal cycle route, paddleboarding off the beach and Roman Landings adventure golf.
