Holiday Cottages in Kingsdown, Kent

A quietly extraordinary village at the foot of the White Cliffs — where the beach is unhurried, the wildflowers are spectacular and the pub is right on the shore

Kingsdown is the kind of place that people stumble upon walking the coastal path from Deal and immediately start wondering why they didn’t book to stay here. A small, unhurried village at the northern end of the White Cliffs of Dover, with a shingle beach that tumbles directly from the cottages to the sea that turns extraordinary in Spring with wildflowers.    It is also, quietly, a place of considerable literary heritage. Ian Fleming lived nearby and set parts of Moonraker on the cliffs between Kingsdown and St Margaret’s Bay – the same clifftop you walk today when you head south from the village. The same cliffs, the same view to France on a clear day.  Kingsdown sits four miles south of Deal along the coastal path and fifteen minutes by car. It is close enough to Deal’s restaurants, market and high street to make every evening interesting, and quiet enough that the mornings feel entirely its own.

Why Kingsdown?

  • The beach is one of the most unspoiled on the Kent coast – shingle, sheltered and almost entirely without commercial development. The Zetland Arms sits practically on the shore. The views are extraordinary and on a summer evening there is nowhere on this coastline quite like it.
  • The wildflowers are a genuine spectacle in late May and June. The beach is edged into a riot of crimson and white.   Photographers make specific trips for and guests stumble upon with real delight.
  • The White Cliffs begin here. Kingsdown marks the northern end of the famous chalk clifftop path that runs south to St Margaret’s Bay and beyond — the walk in either direction is among the finest coastal walking in England.
  • The Ian Fleming connection gives the clifftop a pleasingly literary atmosphere. Fleming set parts of Moonraker on these cliffs – the same path you walk today.  The views that inspired him are unchanged.
  • Kingsdown Golf Club sits high on the downland above the village.   A unique clifftop course with sweeping sea views that makes every round feel memorable.
  • The coastal path north to Deal and Walmer is flat, scenic and one of the best four-mile walks on the Kent coast. The path hugs the shoreline, passes Walmer Castle gardens and arrives in Deal with everything the town has to offer waiting at the end.

A Forelands Day in Kingsdown – The way we’d spend it.

Every Foreland Cottages guest receives a list of our tried and tested local loves near their property,  so you can find your own version.  In the meantime, this is our suggestion:

  • Early morning:  Walk south from the village along the clifftop as the light comes up over the sea. Empty paths, wild grass, France on the horizon if the day is clear.
  • Mid-morning:  Back to the village. Coffee and a slow breakfast at the cottage. If it’s late May or June, take another pass along the beach to see the wildflowers.
  • Late morning:  Walk north along the coastal path towards Walmer and Deal. Pick up coffee at Hut 55 on Walmer beach. Continue into Deal if energy allows.
  • Lunch:  Return to Kingsdown and take a table at the Zetland Arms. Outside if the weather is kind. With the sea directly in front is one of the finest lunches on this coastline.
  • Afternoon:  Rock pools at low tide, a book on the beach, a gentle afternoon with no particular agenda. Kingsdown teaches you very quickly how to do nothing productively.
  • Evening:  Into Deal for dinner. Return along the coastal path if the evening is warm enough and the light is doing what it does at this time of year.
