From Clifftops to Sea Coves: The Best Walks Starting From St Margaret’s Bay
St Margaret’s Bay is one of the most rewarding places to explore on foot along the Kent coast. With its chalk-white cliffs, sheltered shingle bay and peaceful village paths, it offers some of the most beautiful coastal walks near Deal and Kingsdown. Many of the best routes begin right from the beach itself, meaning you can step outside and follow the White Cliffs coastline without needing a car.
Here are a few of our favourite walks starting from St Margaret’s Bay.
St Margaret’s Bay to South Foreland Lighthouse
Distance: 2.5 miles (return)
Difficulty: Easy–moderate
Perfect for: Families, relaxed mornings, café stops
This classic walk begins at the shingle beach in St Margaret’s Bay and climbs gently along the coastal path towards South Foreland Lighthouse. As you gain height, the bay curves behind you and the vast Channel opens ahead. The lighthouse sits along the famous White Cliffs of Dover coastal path, part of the England Coast Path and Saxon Shore Way, offering panoramic views across the sea and sometimes even to France on clear days. Ferries glide across the English Channel and the famous chalk cliffs glow in the light. Stop at the Lighthouse Café for tea, cake a lighthouse tour and a spot of kite flying before wandering back the same way. It’s the perfect “no-rush” walk, beautiful in every season.

St Margaret’s Bay to Kingsdown (via the White Cliffs)
Distance: ~3 miles (one way)
Difficulty: Moderate
Perfect for: Coast-path enthusiasts, dog walkers, big-sky views
Starting from St Margaret’s Bay, follow the clifftop path north towards Kingsdown, one of the most scenic sections of the White Cliffs coastline. This stretch of coast feels wonderfully open — grassy, breezy and endlessly photogenic — with sea views stretching along the Kent coastline. Along the way, you’ll pass quiet viewpoints, wildflowers in spring and dramatic skies in winter. Finish the walk on the beach at Kingsdown or reward yourself with a stop at the Zetland Arms before returning by the beach path or catching a lift back.

St Margaret’s Village & Pines Garden Loop
Distance: 1–1.5 miles
Difficulty: Very easy
Perfect for: Gentle strolls, families, slower days
Begin in St Margaret’s Bay and walk up into the village via the winding residential lanes. Wander through Pines Garden, a calming green space filled with ponds, small waterfalls and tucked-away seating.
Loop back down to the bay for an ice cream, a coffee or simply a sit on the beach. This is a great option for guests wanting something light and peaceful.

St Margaret’s Circular: Lighthouse → White Cliffs of Dover
Distance: 4–6 miles depending on route
Difficulty: Moderate
Perfect for: Keen walkers, photographers, dramatic landscapes
Start at the bay, climb to the lighthouse, and then continue along the England Coast Path towards Fan Bay. The cliffs here feel wild and open – a dream for photographers. Turn around whenever you choose and follow the clifftop home, descending gently back into St Margaret’s Bay.
Why it’s brilliant: You get the most dramatic parts of the white cliffs of Dover without stepping foot in a car!

St Margaret’s Bay to Ness Point (Short Coastal Wander)
Distance: 1.5 miles (return)
Difficulty: Easy
Perfect for: Winter light, peaceful mornings, quick leg-stretchers
This shorter walk begins at the bay and heads along the path towards Ness Point, where the cliffs rise high and the sea feels wonderfully close.
It’s especially beautiful in winter when the chalk cliffs glow in soft pastel light and the coastline is at its most atmospheric. Bring a camera — even on grey days, it’s stunning.

Within minutes, you can reach:
- Towering chalk cliffs,
- Tucked-away coves,
- Open grasslands,
- Peaceful woodlands,
- and some of the best views in southern England.
It’s slow living at its finest — simple pleasures, sea air and space to breathe.
