walmer, kent

Full of character, full of history, and sitting on one of the most intriguing addresses on the Kent coast.
Sleeps 6 | 3 Bedrooms | 1.5 Bathrooms | Private Garden | Private Parking

The Laurels is tucked within the Cavalry Barracks,  a Grade II listed private estate on the edge of Walmer with a story that stretches back to 1794. Originally built to house the 15th Light Dragoons during the Napoleonic Wars, later home to the Royal Marines, and now a quiet, tree-lined residential community just minutes from the sea. The Union Jack flies above the parade ground. The old brick walls still stand. It’s the kind of place you stumble into and immediately want to know more about.

The house itself is a roomy three-floor townhouse with a story of family love and history that you can feel.  Vintage milk bottles line the shelves. Antique plates hang on the wall. A framed Royal Marines record sits above the stairs.  A cupboard full of classic board games invite nostalgia and laughter. This is a home with soul, and guests who stay here will feel it.  The kitchen and dining area is where The Laurels really comes into its own.  Generous, light-filled and made for long breakfasts and unhurried evenings in. The sitting room is calm and comfortable with sash windows looking out over the estate’s manicured communal space. The private courtyard garden is a peaceful spot for morning coffee, shielded from the world and full of established planting.  The bedroom layout gives everyone their own space: An ensuite king with soft green accents and green tree line views, a warm blush-toned double with that tucked-in homely feel and a bunk room that children will claim immediately.

The beach is visible from the windows and is just a two-minute walk. Walmer Castle and its famous gardens, award winning Deal, quiet Kingsdown, Walmer green, paddling pool and numerous coffee spots are on the coastal path and The Laurels sits at the centre of all of it all –  A genuinely special base for families and friends who want the coast, the history and the space to properly unwind.

First Floor: Sitting room seating six across a comfortable sofa and large armchairs, electric fireplace, TV / DVDs.   Sash windows looking onto the trees and other green space. Large fully equipped kitchen and dining room with table seating for six.  Sash windows onto roof tops and Walmer beach.  Stairs to:

Second Floor: King bedroom with wooden sleigh bed, soft green styling, side tables, wardrobes and sash windows to tree lined estate views.  Ensuite to bath with over bath shower, basin and toilet.  Double bedroom in warm blush tones, side tables, chest of drawers, wardrobes and sash windows to Walmer rooftops and beach.   Twin bunk bedroom in sage green, perfect for children – holds that cupboard of wonderful vintage games.  Bathroom with shower, basin and toilet.

Green space:  The green space within the barracks can be utilised by guests, including the large parade grounds – a wonderful serene sea of green.
Other:  This is a loved family home, used by the owners for their own holidays and shared with guests when not in use. It’s full of warmth and character rather than interior design polish and we think that’s rather the point – She is wonderfully homely.

frequently asked questions

Where exactly is The Laurels?
The Laurels resides within the Cavalry Barracks estate which sits in Lower Walmer, a short walk from the beach and Walmer Castle. It’s a private, gated community and one of the more extraordinary places to stay on the Kent coast – a piece of living military history, converted into beautiful homes in the early 2000s.

How far is the beach?
Walmer beach is a two-minute walk from the front door.

Who is The Laurels most suitable for?
The Laurels works beautifully for families, groups of friends and couples who want to be close to everything,  but come home to somewhere genuinely peaceful.

  • Families will love the location. Walmer’s paddling pool and Roman Landings adventure golf are a short stroll away, and the beach is practically on the doorstep for those long, unstructured days that holidays are made of.
  • Groups of friends are well catered for too. Coffee spots dot the coastline, beach yoga at Hut 55 is five minutes away, and bike hire from the same spot means you can spend a whole day exploring the coastal path without getting back in the car. Deal’s restaurants, cafés and independent shops are a leisurely ten-minute walk along the seafront.
  • Walkers couldn’t ask for a better starting point. The coastal path stretches in both directions — north to Deal and Sandwich, south through Kingsdown toward St Margaret’s Bay — with some of the best walking on the Kent coast right from the front door.
  • And for everyone? There’s the beach. Always the beach.

The Cavalry Barracks estate itself adds something quietly special — wide open communal grounds, mature trees, a stillness that the seafront doesn’t always offer. It’s that rare combination: everything within reach, and a genuine sense of retreat when you return.

Is there parking at The Laurels?
Yes.  The Laurels has its own private parking space within the estate.

What train station serves The Laurels?
The nearest station is Deal which is on the direct Southeastern high-speed line from London St Pancras — approximately 90 minutes. A short taxi ride connects the station to the property.

How far is The Laurels from Deal?
Deal is approximately a twenty minutes slow stroll along the coastal path or a five-minute drive — close enough for an evening out, far enough that Walmer feels entirely its own when you return.
