Dog Friendly Kent Coast: Beaches, Walks & Places to Stay
Your local guide to exploring Deal, Walmer, Kingsdown and St Margaret’s Bay with your four-legged companion
If you’re planning a dog friendly holiday in Kent, you’ve picked the right stretch of coastline. The area around Deal, Walmer, Kingsdown, Sandwich Bay and St Margaret’s Bay is genuinely one of the most welcoming corners of England for dogs and their owners – wide open beaches, dramatic clifftop paths, and a local café culture that seems to have decided dogs are not just tolerated but actively celebrated. We should know. We live here, and we bring our dogs too. Here’s everything you need to plan the perfect dog friendly escape on the Kent coast.
The Best Dog Friendly Beaches Near Deal & Walmer
Deal Beach Deal’s long pebble shoreline is one of the most relaxed dog-walking beaches on the Kent coast. It runs the full length of the town seafront, with open views across the Channel and easy access to cafés, independent shops and the famous pier. Dogs are welcome year-round along most of the beach — early morning walks here, with the sea mist still sitting on the water, are something special.
Walmer & Kingsdown Beach Head south from Deal and the coastline gradually quietens. The beaches at Walmer and Kingsdown feel worlds away from busier Kent resorts — here it’s just pebbles, sea, and space for a dog to stretch their legs properly. Low tide opens up wider stretches of shore, and the lack of crowds means even the most excitable dogs can run freely.
St Margaret’s Bay Tucked beneath the White Cliffs of Dover, St Margaret’s Bay is breathtaking in every season. At low tide, rock pools appear along the shoreline and the sheltered bay makes for a wonderfully calm paddle for dogs who love the water. It’s one of the most photographed spots on this stretch of coast — and one of the most dog-friendly.
The Best Dog Walks on the Kent Coast
St Margaret’s Bay to South Foreland Lighthouse This is one of our favourite walks in the entire area, and dogs love it. Starting at St Margaret’s Bay, the path climbs gently along the White Cliffs towards South Foreland Lighthouse, with sweeping sea views opening up as you go. The route is largely open cliff-top path with plenty of space to run, sniff and explore. Allow around an hour and a half at a leisurely pace.
The Deal to Kingsdown Coastal Walk For a longer adventure, follow the coastal path from Deal through Walmer and down to Kingsdown. It’s largely flat, wonderfully scenic, and passes Deal Castle and Walmer Castle along the way — both worth a pause to let the history sink in. When you reach Kingsdown, The Zetland Arms is waiting: a beloved beachside pub right on the shore where dogs are warmly welcomed and the views over the water are hard to leave. Return the same way, or arrange a pick-up from Kingsdown if little legs have had enough.
Betteshanger Park Just a short drive from Deal, Betteshanger Park offers woodland trails and open countryside walks that make a lovely contrast to the coastal paths. Wide, well-maintained routes make it ideal for all sizes of dog and it’s a great option on days when you fancy something a little more sheltered.
For Shorter Strolls Not every dog is a route marcher — and the Kent coast has plenty to offer the café-stop brigade too. The seafront promenades at Deal and Walmer are perfectly suited to a gentle amble: flat, scenic, and dotted with coffee spots where dogs are welcomed in with a bowl of water and a fuss from the staff.
Dog Friendly Pubs, Cafés & Places to Eat
One of the genuinely lovely things about this part of Kent is how embedded dogs are in the local culture. Around the Deal and Walmer area, the vast majority of independent cafés, pubs and restaurants welcome dogs as a matter of course. Here are our personal favourites:
The Coastguard, St Margaret’s Bay Perched at the edge of the bay with uninterrupted sea views, The Coastguard is the kind of pub you plan an afternoon around. Log fires in winter, sea air in summer, and a menu that takes food seriously. Dogs are welcomed warmly – this is a post-clifftop-walk essential.
The Zetland Arms, Kingsdown Sitting almost on the beach itself, The Zetland Arms is a proper locals’ pub with views that make it feel like a discovery every time. Walk in off the coastal path, find a table, and settle in. Dogs belong here.
Deal Pier Kitchen At the end of Deal’s iconic pier, this café serves breakfast and lunch with nothing but sea in every direction. Relaxed, informal and dog friendly — a classic Deal experience.
The Coach, near Deal A short drive from town, The Coach offers excellent food in a relaxed setting with a spacious garden that dogs enjoy as much as their owners. Popular with locals for good reason.
The Waiting Room, Sandwich Sandwich is well worth a half-day visit and The Waiting Room is the ideal base. A much-loved café with a brilliant brunch menu and a genuinely warm welcome for dogs.
The Lane, Deal On Deal’s vibrant high street, The Lane is a relaxed, friendly spot for lunch or an early dinner where your dog can settle under the table while you enjoy the atmosphere.
Barkened, Deal Worth a special mention — this beautiful high-end homeware and lifestyle store on the high street also stocks a carefully curated range of luxury pet products. The perfect place to pick up something special for your dog as a holiday souvenir.
