Making Your Dog the Star: A Perfect Day in Deal with your Dog

How to give your four-legged companion the holiday they deserve — with a little something for you too

There’s a particular joy to travelling with just your dog. No compromises, no itinerary negotiations, no one hogging the duvet. Just you, your best companion and a whole day to fill however you like. And if that day happens to be spent in Deal on the Kent coast, we’d argue you’ve both made an excellent decision.  Deal is one of those rare towns that manages to be genuinely beautiful, genuinely unpretentious and genuinely welcoming to dogs all at once. The locals are friendly, the seafront is right there, and the independent businesses that line the high street seem to have quietly agreed that dogs make everything better. Here’s how to make the most of every hour.

Morning: The Prom, the Sea Air and a Proper Coffee

Start as any self-respecting dog would wish – with a walk along the seafront before the town properly wakes up. Deal’s pebble beach stretches along the full length of the promenade, open and unhurried, with the Channel sitting wide and flat to the east and the pier extending out into the water ahead of you. At this hour it belongs to dog walkers, and the atmosphere is exactly what a holiday morning should feel like.

This is also prime socialising territory. Deal’s dog-walking community is a friendly one.   Expect your dog to accumulate admirers, strike up acquaintances with passing Labradors and generally behave as though they own the place. Which, for this morning at least, they do.

When the legs have had their fill and the sea air has done its work, head for Middle Street Coffee – one of Deal’s most loved independent cafés and a place that takes dog friendliness seriously. Your dog doesn’t just get a polite nod of tolerance here; they get their own bed. Settle in, order something good, and let your companion hold court from their cushion while you work through a coffee and watch Deal come to life around you.

Late Morning: Barkened and the Boutiques

Deal’s high street is one of the genuinely pleasurable ones – independent, eclectic and worth a proper wander. Set off from Middle Street and follow your nose through the lanes and Georgian terraces that give the town its distinctive character until you hit the high street.  It’s a tale of two parts – one side more traditionally commerical and the other full of small independants complete with striped awnings and a morning hello from the owner.

Your dog’s highlight will likely be Barkened – a beautiful high-end homeware and lifestyle store that also stocks a carefully curated range of luxury pet products. Think of it as their personal boutique. Let them choose the treat of the day (within reason), pick up something beautiful for yourseld, and enjoy the kind of shopping that doesn’t feel like a chore.

The surrounding streets reward unhurried exploration full of independent bookshops, galleries, vintage finds and the occasional discovery you didn’t know you needed. Dogs are welcome in the majority of Deal’s independent shops, so there’s no need to leave your companion tied up outside.

Lunch: Deal Pier Kitchen

By now you’ve both earned it. Make your way to the end of Deal Pier, one of the great landmarks of the town, and settle in at the Deal Pier Kitchen. There are few better brunch spots on the Kent coast: the sea surrounds you on all sides, the food is good and the welcome for dogs is genuine rather than grudging. Find a table, let your dog settle at your feet, and take a moment to appreciate that you are, by any reasonable measure, having a very good day.

Afternoon: Pawfest — If You’re Visiting in May

If your visit falls over the 9th or 10th of May, you’d be doing your dog a serious disservice by not taking them to Pawfest at Betteshanger Park which is just a short drive from Deal town centre (and yes, you can walk there if you like a little field hike).

Pawfest is exactly what it sounds like: a full-scale festival dedicated entirely to dogs and the people who love them. There’s a Dog Show Arena, a Splash Zone, a Discovery Zone, a Wellness Zone, an Experience Zone and a line-up of exhibitors, food, drink and entertainment that makes it feel like a proper event rather than a village fete. Your dog will likely consider it the greatest afternoon of their life. You’ll have a hard time disagreeing.

Tickets are available in advance at paw-fest.com — book early as it sells out.

On a non-Pawfest afternoon, Betteshanger Park itself is worth a visit regardless.  The woodland and countryside trails make a lovely contrast to the coastal walking and give your dog a chance to explore something a little wilder before the evening.

Early Evening: Le Pinardier

As the light softens and your dog settles into that particular contented tiredness that only a full day of adventure produces, Deal has one more card to play. Le Pinardier on the high street is a wine bar and shop with real character – the kind of place that feels like a local secret even when it’s busy. Settle in for a glass of something well-chosen, a plate of something small and good, and let the day unwind at its own pace. Dogs are welcome, the atmosphere is warm, and there is genuinely nowhere better to mark the end of a brilliant day.

Back to Your Foreland Cottage

And then home,  to whichever Foreland Cottage is yours for the weekend. A warm, comfortable, dog-friendly base where your companion can declare the sofa theirs and you can reflect on the fact that travelling solo, with the right company, is really no hardship at all.

If you’re planning a dog friendly break on the Kent coast, whether around Pawfest weekend or any time of year, we’d love to help you find the right cottage.
